The Learning Foundry is a training provider targeting 16-24 year olds in the North West.
The brief – To create a suite of materials to market new courses that they would be promoting at the LCR Skills Show. The Skills Show brings together major employers and education providers from across the Liverpool City Region for young people to look at apprenticeships as a next step.
The concept – The idea was to use a new set of colours, upgraded design and newly updated fonts in a soft rebrand of the company; to make the leaflets look more light and fun than they were before in order to appeal to the age group. There was just a day to complete this project, including iterations and signoff before it needed to be printed for the event the next day
The outcome – The timeframe for this brief was limited, with just a day to complete and sign. The initial draft feedback was that the concept was too similar to previous designs, this led me to try a totally new approach, which the client loved and wanted to utilise elements of in other parts of the business.
I also worked with the client to reduce the copy and make it more in line with the target audience. Additional information could still be accessed by adding a QR code which was one of my recommendations. Between March an April the website received 1727 new website users.
The design process – I wanted to do something drastically different to The Learning Foundry’s previous leaflet designs. Their header font didn’t stand out, the colours were bland and corporate, never mind the navy blue being heavily used by collages and universities, they blended in with the rest of the crowd. It didn’t catch my attention whatsoever. I wanted to try and stick with the blue as it is a primary colour for their brand, however, the more I played with the colour and its combinations, the more it didn’t work.
I chose to try something new, the new colours with the rebrand weren’t widely used yet, so it was an open opportunity to use them in this leaflet. As I played around with the teal colour, I started to like the way it felt, however the colour combinations still weren’t sticking, I decided to go with a darker shade of the teal to add that contrast I was looking for without it being too in your face.
